5 easy switches to improve your health blog post is a sponsored blog post, but all opinions are my own.
The last few months I really have started being aware how much things effect our bodies. The food that we eat, the things that we put on our skin, and even chemicals in the air. It all started when I kept having issues with my tongue. My tongue would get painful and have these dark lines on it. After doing some research I figured out it was called geographic tongue (Don’t google pictures. So gross! Thankfully, mine wasn’t that bad.), but not many doctors could figure out what caused it. It seemed to be induced by different things for different people.
Being open to options, I went to an alternative medicine doctor. We ended up figuring out that it was from chemicals in cleaners that I was using and pesticides. We weren’t exactly sure which cleaner it was. I decided to start with the thing that I use the most. That being hand soap.
From there as we run out of a product I have been making switches to things that are better for us. It has been so great to see the changes and improvements. I rarely have issues with my tongue now! Take a look at these easy switches to improve your health.
5 Easy Switches To Improve Your Health (and reduce waste)
Hand Soap- Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap is where I turned when looking for a different hand soap option. I liked that I could pronounce all of the ingredients! It also ranked a 1 (being excellent) on the ewg.com website which is also amazing! My friend, Heather, told me about that website and it has been so eye opening that some “safer” products really aren’t. The other things that I love about this Dr. Bronner product is it is organic and fair trade. The packaging is also 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. Additionally, not only is this Castile Soap good for hand soap, but you can use it in different ratios for different things. I also use this “hand soap” to wash my apples.
Laundry Soap- This was another big one for me. Whatever is on our clothes is literally touching us almost 24/7. Since my youngest daughter was born she had struggled with rashes on the back of her legs. Thought it was dry skin in the beginning and tried different lotions. Switching to Grandma’s Pure & Natural is what has helped us the most. I love that it is a small, local business too!
Dryer Sheets- As I tackled the laundry soap I figured I might as well handle the dryer sheets too. I have read horrible things about them! Previously, I had trying to use some cheap plastic 2 pack dryer balls I found conveniently on the laundry isle of my big box store. They didn’t work. Besides they were plastic which probably still isn’t great. I randomly saw Buckaroo Organics Instagram page where they talked about people most often make the mistake of not using enough dryer balls in their load. It sparked my curiosity so I started to dig around. Come to find out they sale their wool dryer balls in 3 and 6 packs! I decided to give the dryer balls another try since I was a bit more educated! Six wool balls work much better than two plastic balls!
Toothpaste- Since I was so happy with the quality ingredients in Dr Bronner’s hand soap I figured I would give them a go for their toothpaste too. First impressions were good. Some “clean” toothpastes have a weird texture, but this one isn’t bad. Dr Bronner’s All-One Toothepaste doesn’t foam up as much as traditional toothpaste because it doesn’t have any synthetic foaming detergents. It does have some organic and fair trade ingredients in it along with having 100% recycled boxes and tubes.
Chewing Gum- There are phases that I go through were I chew a lot of gum. After eating a lot of sweets I use gum to curb my sweet tooth. When I chew gum often I start to worry about the sugar or additives in it. It may not be a lot with each piece of gum, but it’s the consistency over time that adds up! I decided I would find a gum that didn’t leave me wondering if it was effecting my health in a negative way. Simply Gum has no artificial flavors, preservatives or synthetics. The texture is a little different than traditional gum, but the flavors are excellent! What I thought was so genius of this brand is they have a few papers in the pack so when you need to discard your gum you have a wrapper. This is so helpful seeing how the gum is loose in the package to eliminate extra waste.
Those are 5 easy switches to improve your healthy and even reduce waste! These are some of the switches that I started with because they were easy. It didn’t change any of my habits, just changed products to better options! As I finish more products I continue to switch to healthier option.
