At the gym there is a woman that I talk to just about every morning when we are getting ready. She knows quite a bit about Ryan and me as far as our training and such. The other morning she asked how we were able to take care of the house, have a relationship and train as much as we do.
I told her that I feel like we work really well together. I explained to her a few weeks back I cleaned the gutters out since it needed to be done and I had time, yet earlier that week Ryan cooked dinner when I had to work late. Even though it may not be the typical roles that take place for men and women we work together as a team to make sure our work, workouts, relationship and home are all taken care of.
The woman’s response to that was, “Oh, that is pretty neat!” in a perplexed tone of voice. If I was to tell someone my husband and I started a blog about our marriage they may say, “Oh, that is neat.” because not many people do that. If I showed a coworker a craft project they may say, “Oh, that is neat.” if they had not seen it done before That comment is usually said after hearing or seeing something they have not heard or seen before. It is something unfamiliar to them. So when this woman said, “Oh, that is neat.” about the way Ryan and my relationship works I then thought she must not know of many relationships like that in her world.
Then it made me start thinking how many people would say, “Oh, that is pretty neat.” regarding our relationship. Not because I am curious to know how many people think we are “neat”, but because I want to know why people have not heard of that type of relationship often. Relationship means: the seeking of a mate for emotional and personal support of each other. I don’t know about you but sometimes personal support is fixing dinner while I finish work, or emotional support is to help vacuum because my to do list is too long and I am about to have a mental break down. Are you supporting your spouse emotionally and personally?
Ryan and I feel like doing things to help your spouse, home and family should be a natural thing to do. It comes down to being understanding of each other’s schedules and needs, but also prioritizing things. Last night when I mowed the lawn I definitely would have rather been making some kindergarten games for my class next year. However, Ryan was finishing up our video from last weekend’s race and the lawn needed to be mowed. So…. I mowed! Sometimes we make sacrifices for our relationships…and every single one of them is worth it!
Let’s try to move the comment, “Oh, that is neat.” to “Oh, that is typical.” when referring to people who are considering how to support their spouses emotionally and personally. Try the rest of the week to be understanding of your spouse’s schedules and needs and then do something that would benefit them personally or emotionally!
