The new year is right around the corner. Like 2 days away! For some reason I have been a bit slow to set my goals for 2014. All of our holiday get together’s still went through today- maybe that is why. Or maybe it is just the fact that with a baby on the way I am unsure how things will change and what to realistically set for goals. Whatever the case is I finally got around to setting some goals yesterday! I wanted to share a few thoughts and resources with you.
First off– Ryan and I both are people who believe in goal setting. We know that they drive us personally and has helped us reach many accomplishments. We set goals for the new year, but we reevaluate them throughout the year. We also set small 30, 60 or 90 day challenges throughout the year that focuses on one thing. Goals can be set for all areas of our lives: marriage, health, finances, hobbies and much more!
Secondly– We both set goals for the new year instead of resolutions. New Year’s resolutions are now a thing society jokes about. It is known that people start their New Year’s resolution and in a few weeks they will give up. It is almost as if people hear New Year’s resolution and laugh. They are confident you will fail. However, talk to someone about your goals. Society says successful people set goals. Goals are broken down to manageable tasks that can be accomplished. Goals are serious. Although I don’t like to admit I have the same beliefs or thoughts that stereotypes hold, I think we often do have those mindsets. So why start off with a negative on your side? I want to succeed, you want to succeed! Use the positives that are already set up to help you accomplish what you want. In this case I think that means using the word “goal” instead of “resolution”.
Thirdly– Use a goal setting system that works for you. I am an organized person, but sometimes if there are too many lists or steps it overwhelms me. Depending on your style will depend on what works best for you. Also, depending on your lifestyle will depend on what kind of and how many goals you set. For me I like to set goals in different areas of my life like: family, blogging, our speaking business, finances, education/growth, health etc.
Lastly– I plan to do better with this part than I have previously. Once I have the goals all laid out nice and neatly in a one page format I like to put them somewhere I can read often. Now my plan for this year is actually to read them once a day. I believe this will help me focus on them even more. They will be in the front of my mind.
Before I did my goal planning yesterday I did some research on some documents that would help aid me in the process. Below are what I found that I feel will work best for me. If these don’t fit your personality just take a look on Pinterest or do a Google search. Finding something that will work for you is the first place to start!
Goal Setting Resources:
Areas of Life Goals: One page, easy to follow and fill in the blank. Gives 10 blocks so you can choose what areas you want to set your goals in. Has 3 spots for goals under each subject. Areas often chosen: personal, passions, spiritual, family, children/spouse, relationships/friends, finance/wealth, health, education, and career.
Goal Setting Packet: This cute printable has sheets for reviewing last year’s goals and setting new goals. It provides quarterly, monthly and weekly reviews to keep you on track.
Task Sheet: Aesthetically pleasing one pager that breaks one goal into tasks to help you reach your end result.
I hope these thought and resources will help aid you in accomplishing your goals in the new year! Just think- if you learn only one new thing or create one new positive habit this year you are a better person than you were before. Set reasonable goals and a realistic number of goals!

My biggest goal for 2014 is to become debt-free, minus the house! I have 1 student loan to pay off yet, and I’m determined that 2014 will be the year. 🙂

My biggest goal for 2014 is to workout more and get healthier. Unfortunately, I used to exercise nonstop but with my new job this year, my motivation and routine has died on me.

It is hard Dana to find the energy as a teacher to continue to workout! I trained for 2 marathons while I taught 3rd grade on year and kindergarten the next. I got up at 4:15 every morning and went to bed at 8. If you really want it you can figure out how to get it! Go for it 🙂
