Have you had marriage trouble? When is the time to give up on your marriage?
I logged on to my personal Facebook account and saw words much like the ones quoted above as someones status. As I read the status I thought what a sad place to be in. Not knowing what else to do and wondering if walking away was the only or best option. I could see that there were many comments left under the status. I wondered what words of encouragement and support I would find under the status. I expanded the comments to see all of them expecting to find great words of wisdom.
Instead, comment after comment I read how people said to “follow your heart”, “you know what is best for you and your child”, “some people don’t change”, etc, etc.
Now I don’t want to be misleading. The status depicted the spouse having an addiction problem and not making changes over a long period of time. They also felt the spouse was not willing to get help or work things out.
But it seemed like I read a ton of comments that suggested to just throw their hands up and walk away. Maybe there were not as many comments as I think there was, but honestly there was enough that put me into shock. There was one comment that was kind of neutral based and the rest leaned towards the give up side. It was on my heart and I had to message them.
Again, I don’t want to be misleading because I obviously do not know any of the details of their relationship or story. I am not trying to be judgmental at all towards them, but use their story as I know there are so many in similar situations.
Reading the status and comments made me come to several different thoughts and conclusions:
1. When there starts to become an issue in our marriages we have to address them quickly or else we can end up years down the road with piles of issues that were never addressed that seem too large to handle.
2. If at any point we feel like the only option is to give up and walk away we probably need professional help to work through the issues.
3. The world seems to have come to a point where it is “normal” or “okay” to walk away from marriages. Which is so extremely sad to me.
4. I have heard stories of marriage that have faced hard times, worked through them and have even a great story and marriage. All things that are great are worth working for.
5. Since when do we know what is best? We have to remember to rely on God and this is in our marriages also!
6. We should be willing to work on our marriage a little each day to keep ourselves out of marriage trouble.
Today I am very interested in your answers! My question for you today:
If you saw that type of status on your “Facebook Friends” wall what kind of advice would your comment be? Tell us below!

I can’t take credit for this, it was on another blog I subscribe to: Women’s Bible Café
But it went right along with what your blog is talking about with marriage. I am sure there are some circumstances that aren’t repairable. But too many of us throw in the towel because it is easier to do than fight for what is truly important. Here is what Women’s Bible Café has to say about marriage:
God gave marriage as a gift to Adam and Eve. They were created perfect for each other. Marriage was not just for convenience, nor was it brought about by any culture. It was instituted by God and has three basic aspects: (1) The man leaves his parents and, in a public act, promises himself to his wife; (2) the man and woman are joined together by taking responsibility for each other’s welfare and by loving the mate above all others; (3) the two are united into one in the intimacy and commitment of sexual union, which is reserved for marriage. Strong marriages include all three of these aspects. via Life Application Study Bible
I like that! Oh, how true it is! Thanks for sharing 🙂
It takes two + one(Jesus) to have a good marriage. Everyday is a new day for improvement in a marriage.
No Jesus. No Marriage. Know Jesus Known Marriage.
That is so true, Ramon. It takes loving Jesus first to be able to love our spouse unconditionally like Jesus does us!
