I feel like the word “quirk” is often perceived as a negative term or that it means “odd habit”. Therefore, I want to start this post by learning the real definition for quark.

Quirk-
A particular behavioral habit or trait.

The definition indicates that it is neither a negative habit nor an odd trait. It simple states it is something that we do through our behavior that has become a habit or trait.

Some of my quirks:

I unpack my bag from the day as soon as I come in the door.

When I floss my teeth I sit on the sink- I have to make sure I am doing it good!

Every week I use the same towel in my gym bag. Don’t worry it gets washed! It just fits so well.

Now if you were to ask Ryan what he considers my quirks the odds are he would probably list others. What seems different to one person may seem natural to another. I mean I am pretty sure Ryan rotates through two of the same towels for the gym as well. See. We were made for each other 😉

After spending time with our significant others, hopefully before marriage, we all started to notice quirks. Some people have more than others, but we tend to notice even the small ones. We notice them because the habits are different than ours. Two of the first things I noticed with Ryan were: that he checked expiration dates on food like he was from the health department and that after filling his plate on a buffet he would go wash his hands. It makes perfect sense. Who wants to eat old food or have gross hands when eating?

After the quirks start appearing this is when we have to continue to freely except our significant other for who they are. Often times in relationships when quirks are not accepted one person starts nagging or complaining in hopes to change the other person. You can only imagine the dilemma that puts the couple in: Person one trying to change person two while person two is resenting person one for trying to change them. That is no good!

The thing is you have to remember to love your spouse even with their quirks! Keep in mind your spouse’s quirks are one thing that helps make them unique! Instead of trying to change their behavioral habits be open minded so that you may accept them. Those habits are what make them them!

Leave a comment below telling what was one of the first quirks you noticed in your significant other that helped you realize they were unique?
