Is Marriage Easy? It Was… Until Today.

Since we have been married people often ask us how the married life is going. Close friends have asked us the same question in a tone of voice that says, “We can talk about it, if you need to.” Ryan and I have come home some days talking about the comments people make about marriage and how hard it can be in the first few months. Is marriage easy? So far we feel like it has been. Don’t get us wrong we work on our relationship daily, but it just doesn’t seem like hard work, more of a type of work we enjoy. Ryan once said, “If this is the hard part what do we have to look forward to?!”

Then, today happened… The alarm goes off at 5:45 to start the day. I get around and am ready to head to the gym. Ryan is still soaking up some rest. I am pulling out of the garage watching carefully as it is a tight squeeze with Ryan’s car in the drive way. Luckily my car sits a bit higher than his and my mirror goes over his. I am watching up front to make sure I am good as I know I am close and all the sudden I realize I hit his car with my back end. I actually don’t know how I knew: was there a noise, or did I feel the tension between cars? I pull forward and back up again past his car.

My first thought was, “Do I go in and tell him now or tell him later?” My next thought was, “It’s on his passenger side maybe he would never notice.” I take a look at it in the 6am light. It doesn’t look too bad. Most of it just rubbed off. No scratch to the paint! Phew! As I start to go inside I am trying to figure out the words I am going to use. “Babe, I just backed up into your car.”? “Honey, I just grinded our cars together.”? “Um. I just bumped your car.”? I chose the last one.

So I tell him, “Um. I just bumped your car.” and tell him sorry. I tell him I don’t think it is too bad. He then asks, “You can see out there?” My thought was then, “That is strange I could see outside at this time.” I even looked out the window and think, “It is still pretty dark out.” As I don’t turn on my headlights until further back in the drive way. I feel bad about it and am sad. Ryan hugs me and tells me it is ok.

I get to the gym and get a text message that says something like he isn’t too worried about it or he would park in the street if he was, that he loved me and to have a good work out.  That made me feel a little better. I complete my workout and call him when I am headed home. I ask him if he looked at the damage. He said yes and that it was a little worse than he expected. Oh no, I think.  A few minutes later I pull up to the house expecting his car to be in the street. However it was still in the driveway. I take a look at it. It is a little worse that I expected too! And I even looked at the thing! It dented it and scratched off the paint. To think earlier I thought it wasn’t too bad because no paint was missing! That 6am deceiving light. I came inside feeling even worse and apologized some more.

Is marriage easy? Yes, sometimes it is. Is marriage hard? Yes, sometimes it is. Especially when we know we did something not so admiral and we have to go confess and apologize. Although I know dealing with the situation at that moment was a much better option of doing it later, or even acting like it never happened. Now I owe Ryan some touch up car paint in the color of maroon. Thankfully, I have a husband that loves me and forgives me!
