Yesterday, I got over 8 inches of my hair cut off to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths! Let me tell you a little back story.
When Ryan proposed in Switzerland in September 2011 I started to grow my hair out for the wedding. (I mean it was only 7 weeks away so it didn’t get that much longer) I continued to grow my hair out. I wanted to be able to put it in a low pony tail when I cycled.
This is the length my hair was in Switzerland.
How I was able to get it in this kind of pony tail I have no idea!
After some time my hair was getting longer. I could finally put it in a low pony tail for races! With my hair being so thick I like keeping it more on the short end just because it take so much time and effort to care for it. Not to mention it gets heavy and makes me hot.
My cousin got diagnosed with cancer around this time. We were doing lots of fundraisers and things to support him and the family, but none of it seemed enough. One of my friend’s mom had been battling cancer as well. Then, one of my student’s mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. And later another friend from high school mom was diagnosed with cancer. And no matter what I did in honor or to support these people and their families none of it seemed enough!
I saw each of them go through different stages and treatments. They each had their own battle. They each fought hard. They each lost their hair.
One day I was fixing my hair and once again was getting aggravated at how long it took to blow dry and how staticy it was. Then, it came over me just how silly that was! I knew four people (and many more that I didn’t know) at that moment that would love to have their hair. They wouldn’t be taking it for granted, instead they would be over joyed to have their hair.
At that moment I made the choice that I would continue to grow my hair and donate it for a wig for a cancer patient in honor of these people I knew.
Over the next two years I continued to grow my hair. Only trimming it occasionally. I will not lie, there were days I just wanted to chop it off and forget the whole idea. There were days I complained about my hair. And some day I even wondered if the receiver of the wig would really appreciate my donation. But I continued to tell myself it was worth it! Although I can not change the fact these people have cancer I can indeed donate my hair!
So here we are about a week and a half away from our due date. I figured now was a great time to get my hair cut before baby arrives. I had some back and forth trying to decided if I really wanted to do it at this point or wait until after baby. Cutting 8 inches off would once again leave me with no pony tail which I might want during labor! However after finding my hair on the stove and then finding something matted it my hair (gross, I know!) I knew it was time! Yesterday was the day!
I am so happy that I stuck with my choice. Yes, at some points it seemed like it was taking forever. But I am so glad that I will be able to be a part of making someones day when they get to have a wig to wear!
I am donating my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths in honor and memory of Darian Varnell, Belinda Walker, Paula Baker and Lori Taylor. You all have inspired me in ways you will never know! This is one small way that I could honor you!
A special thank you to Rachel Washburn at Serendipity Salon and Spa for collecting my donation and finding a cut and style that works for me!
I’m off to go mail my hair!
Until Next Time- Truly Love,
Cassie

So awesome and inspiring Cassie! Love it 🙂
You are such an inspiration! If I didn’t dye my hair I would totally do this 🙂
