Over and over again Ryan and I have said people have to be willing and accepting of their spouse to make it work. We talk about loving our spouse and their quirks on this blog a lot. Other than that we really couldn’t come up with a term or phrase to sum it up. After reading a wonderful book by Dr. Tim Kimmel I now know it can be summed up like this: Having a Grace Filled Marriage
.
I am going to share an excerpt from the book that really made sense to me and aligns with our mission here at True Agape.
Suppose I took a credit card out of my wallet, help it up in the air and said, “This credit card represents what it is about your spouse that drains the joy out of your relationship.” Now imagine I hold this credit card sideways between my thumb and index finger, take a few steps back from you, extend my arm, and then look at you. Can I see you? The answer of course is yes. Although the credit card takes up some space at the end of my extended are, I can still take in the big picture of who you are.
Now suppose I pull my arm in close and hold that same credit card just an inch from my eyes. Can I still see you? The answer is no. Did the credit card change size? No. It’s still as small as it always was, but because of how closely I’m holding it to my eyes, it’s all I can see.
To me this was an amazing analogy of how we can preserve our husband’s quirks! We can see them as a small part of who our husbands are or we can choose to focus on them which makes them stand out even more to us.
This book is filled with great insight! The main idea is that we must give grace to our spouse in the same way that God gave it to us. Unconditionally! If you want to find out what else Dr. Tim Kimmel has to say on this topic enter to win the book below!
Good luck! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
