Gabrielle Giffords-For Better or For Worse

Occasionally, one of the yahoo news stories seem compelling enough for me to click on: “Humor and Determination Key to Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Recovery” was one that caught my attention. I read about how Gabrielle and her husband thought the year 2011 was going to be this wonderful year full of great things. It made me think about how I am feeling about all that is going on for Ryan and I. We are now married, getting a great deal on a house, got us a side position to pay for our races, the blog is up and running… so many things going well!

Then, only 8 days into the year the Giffords world had greatly changed. At that moment I realized the same could happen to us in an instant. As I continue to read through the article it mentions how Gabrielle used humor and determination to make it through the recovery to this point. The article gave a lot of credit to her husband, Kelly, for being beside her the whole way and encouraging her through the whole process.

I thought about how it takes an amazing person to overcome a situation like what they went through. I can only imagine the struggles and hardships not only for the victim, but for the spouse of the victim. I hope and pray that if something was ever to happen to Ryan or I the other could be just as amazing. Then my thought was that is exactly what I vowed to do when I said ‘for better or for worse’. I am glad the title of the article compelled me to read the story. It gave me a deeper understanding of the world around me and commitment I made to Ryan.

The “sickness and in health” vow is probably the most profound vow. You never really understand or consider the depth of what “sickness” entails. It encompasses metal, physical and emotional sickeness/health. I pray that all couples enjoy more years of health than they ever encounter in sickness!
