It is important for us to have communication respect. Ryan and I believe open, honest communication is key to making marriage work. However, being open and honest doesn’t mean you just say everything you think aloud. I am of course not saying to lie, but first think before you speak.
Ryan is really great about this when it comes to my friends or family. I will be telling him a story or about a situation and he listens. He first sees my opinion on it or even will ask me, “How do you feel about that?” Once he has a clear understanding about where I am coming from he then will give me his thoughts and opinions.
This is a form of communication respect. He is making sure he is respecting my friends and family and my thoughts about the situation through our conversations. He is sure to not attack a person, but instead focus on the action. I have never felt like I had to offend or stand up for anyone that I was talking to him about because he is sure to be respectful.
Communication respect can help eliminate arguments and hurt feelings. The next time your spouse is talking about a situation involving their friends or family double check to make sure you are showing that communication respect.
